You are SO right. Black denim can have the weirdest smell to them. I think it's the dye? I don't know. but you're right.

We got to step our game up and buy the more expensive jeans :)

I know the smell you're talking about here. Time & fabric softner has always won the battle. Try Woolite/cold water if concerned about the dye running.
To me its akin to the smell that some wools have. I feel you, g.

Some of y'all are some losers with poor comprehension skills. I second washing it with detergent and white vinegar. That's what my aunt told me and it worked.

Lol! It's the dye that you're smelling —
I wash mine a few times by themselves.
Let them soak in fabric softener for a little while first

The smell is the from the chemicals manufacturers use to achieve the various colored jeans. It is almost a burnt, lye (think relaxers) type of smell. Soak them in baking soda and warm water to neutralize the smell, then throw in the wash on a regular cycle. I would hang them to dry instead of using the dryer; the chemicals may be so embedded into the fabric that the smell becomes "baked" in when using the drying machine.

Isn't that the smell of Denim?

There is a chemical smell to black denim jeans that blue denim jeans don't have. My husband only wears black denim Levi jeans and they have been washed many times, but the bad chemical smell never seems to wash out. I've changed my clothes detergent from Tide, Gain and Arm & Hammer brands but nothing works.

Gotta be the dye because all the other denims don't have that diesel fuel stink.

I've never had that issue. I buy all my black jeans from Levi tho.. maybe it has it and I've never noticed it

Is it me or do black jeans have this really bad burnt smell to them. Everytime I buy a pair of black jeans they smell so weird. Even washing them doesn't get it out.

This should help.

I'm going to try experimenting with soaking a pair in a tub of buttermilk and another pair in a tub of Mediterranean Sea Salt in water.

I used to work in clubs that allowed smoking so I would suggest using distilled white vinegar in the rinse cycle. This method saved my clothes from stinking. Plus, I wore all black and it didn't fade the color.

Doesn't leave a smell either.

Ironically, this works for synthetic wigs as well. Just spray the inside of it, then Spritz it lightly with the vinegar, and let it dry. Doesn't take long.
